BRINCOS!

Via BoingBoing: An Argentine artist has designed a line of sneakers called "Brincos" (from Spanish Brincar, to jump) for immigrants who are sneaking accross the Mexican border.
"The shoe includes a compass, a flashlight because people cross at night, and inside is included also some Tylenol painkillers because many people get injured during crossing," Werthein says... An Aztec eagle is embroidered on the heel. On the toe is the American eagle found on the US quarter, to represent the American dream the migrants are chasing. A map - printed on the shoe's removable insole - shows the most popular illegal routes from Tijuana into San Diego.

Rumor has it his next project is ricepaddy slippers for FOBs.

Soca Master Rupee

Rupee chillin' with bodacious Rihanna

Late night expeditions in the Digital Bombing mobile unit led us to an interesting show, with Rupee. You had cats like Jah Warrior Shelter Hi Fi, Mr. E and DJ Polo runnin' things Irie style. Jonny Mack definitely puts on a good show. Levi Myaz had already performed his hits like "Music Is My Land" and "What Would You Do". I think he had already done his set... Who knows... Rupee took the stage and dominated with his Soca (Soul & Calypso for you late-bloomers) flavors and mixed up it with all types of reggae/dancehall vibes. He bigged up all the massive in the place (hella pinoys, mexicans and carribean crew in the house). He did his hits like "Til Morning" and "You Never Know"... At this point, Rupee led the crowd into peace signs in the air. Pretty dope shit going down. Of course he had the ladies throwing dem panties to the stage as soon as he started his R&B rendition of "Tempted To Touch"... It quickly switched up to the Original and Remix versions and Muthafuckas was tearing the roof off... He even handed the mic to the girls at front row to sing. hahah! He did his track that featured Lil Kim "Do The Damn Thing" Get your freak on... Time to raise the roof when he went into another hot track "JUMP" which brought the high velocity Soca flavor. They even called a PUUUULLL UP on their own track, which was dope. Soca crew in full effect. Reminded me of like some Merengue styles you be seeing on Sabado Gigante on Univision. How many of you fools dont speak spanish but watch the shows anyways because of all the hot bitches? way too many! Just when you think the show is over... People getting mad and its only so Rupee makes a return... Rupee returns with another banger "What Happens In De Party" Whats happens in San Francisco, Stays in San Francisco!!! Dont run and tell nobody!! and like that it was over!! Overall a fun time. Here's your opportunity to check out the show. If you havent heard Soca before, Check it out...

Harold Hunter R.I.P.

Man, It seems we are losing soldiers left and right nowadays. If your into Skateboarding, The world has lost one of the most entertaining skaters of all time... Original Zoo Yorker Harold Hunter was found dead yesterday in his NY apartment, of an apparent Drug overdose. Yall might remember him from his role in the 1995 film "KIDS". The dude was very skilled on the skateboard and was just a hella cool cat when he came around town to ride the streets. I remember them old contests they used to show on the old skool 411VM videos of The Brooklyn Bridge gap and all them cats attempting to make the jump and Harold took that shit like a champion. R.I.P. to a true skateboard legend!

Shortkut and Apollo Inna SF

Sometimes you gotta trek out to the local club spots and see what the fuck is going down. This night caught me by surprise... You had Triple Threat's Apollo and Shortkut doing their thang and special guest was Mr. Mixx from 2 Live crew. What can you expect more than a crazy bootyhop. Mr. Mixx did his thing on the Mic and on the tables, representing in cool out mode. The highlights of the night were definitely Apollo and Shortkut's club style mixing... Here you got DJ Shortkut cuttin' up the Dancehall/Reggae HipHop set and DJ Apollo dropping all the old skool jams, some booty cuts and ending the set with some Bay Area hyphy shit... Dont gimme no bammer weed... We dont smoke that shit in the SFC.

GENERAL MALICE: THE FINAL TAKEOVER

We just got the word that top notch Drum 'n Bass producer General Malice is releasing his debut album on March 14th 2006! Here's an excerpt from the press release:

Clint Harley Ward, A.K.A. General Malice has had a dream of innovating the drum 'n bass scene to a point that no one has touched before. As a significant figure on the notorious Big Cat Records in Japan and a rising star on Nitrous Oxide Entertainment in the United States, Malice has always stayed true to his experimental sound, mashing up hip-hop, amen-ridden jungle, reggae and metal within a single track while turning bass-craving junglists into "rabid monsters of the pit."

His latest album, "Final Takeover," is based around a style dubbed "extreme reggae, dancehall, IDM-style mash-up" and features twelve original tracks, each with a different sound than the one previous to it. This album will be available on March 14, 2006 as a CD and Three-piece vinyl set and will be available at all major retailers including Best Buy, Virgin, HMV and Tower.

Bringin' influences from the legendary Gangstarr, Kraftwerk, Slayer, Remarc, Ludacris, Ray Keith, DJ Shadow, Lee Perry, and Massive B, this young gun DJ+Producer rages hard and rough enough for the next sound with international all-star guests KRS-1, The NIPPS, and General Jah Mikey. It's punk fueled eletronica with a solid reggae & indie rock consistency. If IDM jungle/drum and bass were ever to break into cross-over mainstream, one would reference General Malice's "Final Takeover" album as being the "one that put it on the map." It is the first ever American reggae jungle mash-up album.

We heard some audio samples from the album and the shit is hot! Peep the myspace link below for more info!

R.I.P. Jay Dilla

Here at Digital Bombing and our affiliates, Freeburning, N2O Entertainment and Mashup Sound are at a loss for words over the death of one of the most prolific hiphop producers ever, James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla. He departs days after the release of his latest instrumental album entitled "Donuts". For all of you who dont know Jay Dee, He was part of The Ummah, The production team behind A Tribe Called Quest. He also produced and remixed artists such as The Pharcyde, Common, Busta Rhymes, Keith Murray, De La Soul, Das Efx and many many more. He was also part of Slum Village in creating their sound and went on to work with Madlib as JayLib... His discography spans over 15 years and It is something I am glad he is leaving us all with. Hopefully people who slept will finally discover what he did for hiphop. Last night on the Friday Night Mixtape with DJ Audio1, He dedicated his first hour to the career of Jay Dee and played nothing but beats produced by Jay Dee. It was real awesome Mid-90's hiphop. We also hear that J Rocc did a dedication set over at Divine Forces and DJ Platurn/The Oakland Faders dedicated their club night at The Down-Low in Jay Dee's memory by playing music spanning his career. We leave you with 5 classics from Jay's catalog. Please go out and buy his latest album, Donuts, and support his family. R.I.P. Jay Dilla!

Tessanne Chin

Tessanne Chin gave us some love on the N20 myspace so we thought we'd give some back! Tessanne was in the JA rock band Mile High and toured with legend Jimmy Cliff, so you know she's no lightweight! She's got a bangin voice, but not one that you'd usually associate with Jamaica, she's more on rock tip with a reggae-tinged band backing her up. Hopefully she'll make her way to LA sometime so we can see the styles live. Peep the Tessanne Chin myspace and spread the word!

Flipsyde makin' noise on NBC Winter Olympics

I remember driving around during the summer, listening to Live105 and hearing this dope "HipHop/Rock" mashup styled tune... "Someday" was that song I kept hearing... "Someday" was a song about dark days and friends' deaths, penned years ago by struggling musicians in Oakland. Its mix of rock, hip-hop, and Latin guitar helped to get the band, Flipsyde, a record contract and European tours. But album sales were scant; fame was elusive.

Then NBC's Olympic advertising machine turned "Someday" into a song about perseverance on ice skates. The network filmed the band in a slick music video that doubles as an ad for the Torino games. Suddenly, CD sales -- though still small -- are rising, and Flipsyde seems to be everywhere. They've been on late-night TV, performed at the Winter X Games, and got a plug in ''Fortune," where an essayist marveled that he'd found new music in an NBC house ad.

Flipsyde's Olympic break is a telling example of how the music industry has changed. It used to be that a song became a hit, time passed, and an ad agency used it to sell a product. (And purists grumbled that the band was selling out.) Check what you've been sleeping on. You can download the video for free from iTunes this week or watch NBC for a little, You’ll see it.

Bacchanal 45: Soca Escape!

Among the Japanese reggae labels, Bacchannal 45 is at the forefront, especially for international recognition. Lead by the cute duo Hemo & Moofire, they've been getting good response worldwide and have even been doing shows in the Carribean. After a couple years of spreading the love between the islands of Japan and Jamaica, recently they've been branching out into the Trinidad & Tobago styles with the Soca Escape riddim! The riddim has voicings from soca stars like Dawg E Slaughter, Maximus Dan, and H2O Phlo along with Japanese cats like Micky Rich and Apple Eye. Its a good riddim that gets the girls wining! Peep the video off of the Bacchanal website, has Rankin Taxi in there too, homie kinda looks like a bald Chow Yun Fat?
